Project Overview
Mother Earth Clan (MEC) is a grassroots organization co-founded by Lorene Sisquoc and Cindi Alvitre, whose members are descendants of Southern California Indigenous inhabitants. MEC saw a lack of Indigenous cultural education in public and private schools and took it upon themselves to create curriculum that centered traditional Native American practices to educate their communities. The organization now engages in a variety of projects, all of which have the common goal of connecting Indigenous American communities, preserving generational connections, and underlining the importance of caring for Mother Earth.
I redesigned the website for Mother Earth Clan (MEC), preserving its original content and imagery while implementing significant technical and visual improvements. My goal was to create a more engaging and intuitive experience that better reflects MEC’s mission and invites exploration. Through thoughtful design choices—grounded in clarity, curiosity, and user flow—I aimed to attract more visitors, raise awareness, and encourage deeper interaction with the site’s content.
Key Achievements

Redesigned and launched a fully functional website that clearly communicates the organization’s mission and offerings.
-
Collaborated closely with stakeholders through bi-weekly check-ins to align on priorities, explain design decisions, and gain approval at each stage.

Notes of previous website -- formatting and layout, what working, what wasn't and possible ideas for changing it, styles they gravitated towards.

Key Design Choices
All design choices were rooted in goals, both for the the organization and this project.
Goals of Organization
To emphasize the symbiosis between human beings and nature.
Reflection of goals in website
Incorporated native flowers and plants from the Inland region of Southern California, where Mother Earth Clan is based and conducts educational workshops.

To help increase the visibility of the Native American tribes and Nations of Southern California and promote cultural continuity. Amplify Mother Earth Clan leaders work and other indigenous voices.
Created a two-page spread showcasing Mother Earth Clan books on one page and books by other Indigenous authors on the other.
Highlighted a range of regional and national Native American projects.
To revitalize the cultural heritage of Southern California Native traditions.
Designed visuals illustrating Mother Earth Clan’s 11 Ways of Living, incorporating personal photos of the founders.
To provide a strong cultural and educational foundation for community members and future generations.
Created pages showcasing the educational classes offered by Mother Earth Clan.
Personal Reflections
With any project, I learn a lot about myself, design process and capabilities, and working with clients. Collaborating with the founder, Lorene, emphasized the importance of clear and comprehensive explanations for design choices, recognizing the need to bridge the gap between designer and non-designer perspectives. To me it make complete sense of why I chose that font our aligned something a certain way, but to someone not experienced in design work that won't be as intuitive. I also learned the importance of thoroughly designing out the wireframes and pages before building the website. Website builders can be slow and finick-y, so by finalizing all designs can make that already frustrating process go smoother.
